In these short stories about his days of childhood and youth Fakir Baykurt shows his love and deep deference to his mother which
he cherished all his life – especially when describing her little frailties with delicate humour. You will enjoy that
especially in the story Meine Mutter betrinkt sich (Mum getting drunk).

I read that story ( Meine Mutter
betrinkt sich) in March 2007 in Kevelaer, a small town near the Dutch border. This activity was part of an event in
behalf the Übersetzer-Aktionstag (Literary Translators' Protesting Day) which was to bring forward the struggle of German
literary translators for adequate payments. The event was run by my collegue Ilja Braun, a translator and journalist; he took
part by reading from his own translation works himself. The third of us was Dorothea Trottenberg; she read some parts from her
				translation of a Russian novel.
